Team Spotlight: Kayla Black, Identity Manager

Kayla Black was no stranger to patient records when she joined Harris Data Integrity Solutions as a project coordinator. Working in the EMR was part of her daily routine as a hospital patient services representative, but what went on behind the scenes in terms of maintaining the integrity of the patient data within those records wasn’t something she considered until she began working in patient identity management.

She quickly realized that patient identity managers play an essential role in healthcare, helping “facilities minimize the impact of duplicate patient records in their systems, which in turn protects patients’ data and also their safety,” she says.

Now an identity manager with Harris Data Integrity Solutions, Kayla says she is part of “an amazing team here that supports one another wonderfully. It is also great to get amazing feedback from clients and to have them return for more work.”

If there was one thing she wishes more people knew about patient identity, it’s that patients should be engaged in managing their data to ensure that it is both accurate and complete. This, in turn, helps their clinical team provide the best, safest care possible. “What you give the receptionist or what information you put down in your chart does matter and should be filled out thoroughly and with the correct information,” says Kayla.

When she’s not focused on data integrity, Kayla is focused on her three girls—who keep her on the move, racing between sports and academic activities—as well their family’s 10 pets “ranging from reptiles to dogs.” It’s a fast-paced personal and professional life that she wouldn’t change for the world.
